Previously, VMware used to call itself as "the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter". The virtualization giant company now refers to itself as "the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop through the datacenter and to the cloud". VARIndia talked to Ganesan Arumugam, Director-Partners, VMware India & SAARC, who shared his insights with us.
How is VMware addressing strongly into the Cloud Computing?VMware, the global leader in Business Infrastructure Virtualization, delivers proven virtualization solutions – from the desktop through the datacenter and to the cloud – that energize business, while saving energy. IT departments in companies of all sizes rely on VMware and its industry-leading platform, VMware vSphere, to achieve a more efficient, controlled and flexible IT environment. We are focussed on creating a bridge between the private and public cloud. VMware and its cloud services partners offer new technologies and services that give customers application compatibility, enterprise-readiness and choice in type of service and location to enable seamless interoperability and mobility between private and public clouds. VMware offers the only fully compatible, unified platform, VMware vSphere, that seamlessly integrates both private and public clouds to deliver applications securely, where and when they are needed. We now have the ability to have a bottom-up strategy with existing applications because virtualization allows us to take existing applications forward into the cloud. And with SpringSource, now we can talk to new applications and how they come into the cloud.VMware vCloud initiative is the only cloud solution that brings together leading technology from VMware, a huge ecosystem of technology and cloud service providers, and compatibility for all your applications living in the cloud, on or off premise. Also, our Center of Excellence (CoE) for cloud computing, which was launched in Bangalore this March, is equipped with labs and replicas of infrastructure, enabling customers and partners to see VMware solutions at work in true-to-life business scenarios. What is the growth strategy for the current year 2010, as they are working with various vendors like HP, NetApp, EMC and many more? Please elaborate? With an estimated 70% or more of the $350 billion in annual datacenter spending focussed on maintaining existing infrastructures and only 30% or less on new technology initiatives and applications that can truly differentiate businesses, now is the time for a new approach that enables organizations to streamline and optimize their IT strategies without being forced to choose between best-of-breed technologies and end-to-end vendor accountability. Our collaboration with Cisco and NetApp delivers new design architectures that help customers evolve virtualized datacenters to be more efficient, dynamic and secure. VMware, Cisco and NetApp has introduced an end-to-end Secure Multi-tenancy Design Architecture that provides enhanced security in cloud environments by isolating the IT resources and applications of different clients, business units or departments that share a common IT infrastructure.Cisco and EMC, together with VMware, has also introduced the Virtual Computing Environment coalition, an unprecedented collaboration of industry leaders that will simplify and accelerate virtualization and help customers transition to private cloud infrastructures. The coalition is focussed on (1) development, (2) unified sales, service and support experience and (3) partner ecosystem enablementWhat is the potential of Cloud computing fever in India?Cloud computing is the next logical stage in the adoption of virtualization and the transformation of IT. Users want the ability to access infrastructure resource pools how and when they choose. In 2010, IT departments will continue to optimize financial energy by reducing capital and datacenter costs to get more done with less, shift human energy from servicing hardware to driving the business, and save the earth’s energy by using less power, cooling and real estate. In Cloud Architecture, how can vendors expand their business and Networks to the next level?VMware has partnered with hundreds of hosting and cloud computing vendors to enable delivery on a common VMware platform. This gives users choice in deploying applications, allowing easy transitions between providers, as well as on and off premise use. In principle, there are two fundamental premises for businesses: 1. The infrastructure is 100% virtualized – processor, storage, networking. 2. It can span internally owned and operated infrastructure, with external publicly available infrastructure, under managed SLAs. Application owners who need to roll out new business services are shielded from the complexity of servers, storage and network infrastructure, leaving them to focus on the delivery of business value. The virtual private cloud brings the benefits of cloud computing under the control of corporate IT.Some of the benefits of a VMware vSphere 4-enabled virtual private clouds are: o Efficiency – Maximum resource utilization through the complete virtualization of all server, storage and network resources. o Resiliency – Bridging internal with externally available infrastructure, the virtual private cloud can dynamically provision capacity or failover capability on-demand. o Accountability – Leveraging a usage-based, pay-as-you-go model, customers can choose to turn CapEx into OpEx, accurately transferring costs to recipient organizations, much like the typical “utility” bill. o Quality – Standardized, contractual, auditable service levels, well-defined upfront, and automatically ensured. o Future-proof – The virtual private cloud built on VMware vSphere 4 works for existing and future applications with no need to rewrite applicationsWhat is the core strength of VMware and how the Virtualization plays role in the cloud? Our 11 years of experience in developing our products and working with partners has given us a significant technology lead. We have made constant performance improvements to the platform and have worked with software, hardware and processor vendors to meet the most extreme performance demands for customers. Cloud computing is the next logical stage in the adoption of virtualization and the transformation of IT.VMware’s vSphere 4, the industry’s first cloud operating system, transforming datacenters into dramatically simplified cloud infrastructure. It enables the next generation of flexible, reliable IT services to be delivered both within internal clouds as well as from external clouds. As the first cloud OS in the industry, VMware vSphere 4 aggregates and manages large pools of infrastructure – processors, storage and networking – as a seamless, flexible and dynamic operating environment. Any application – an existing enterprise application or a next-generation application – runs more efficiently and with guaranteed service levels on VMware vSphere 4. For enterprise IT organizations, VMware vSphere brings the power of cloud computing to the enterprise datacenter, immediately slashing IT costs while strategically positioning to be the IT service provider of the future. For hosting service providers, VMware vSphere provides a more economic and efficient path to becoming a cloud service provider.
