Huawei introduces Handsets for Open Market

With the launch of 20 models that include a mix of 3G, GSM and CDMA handsets, Huawei Telecommunications has announced its entry into the open mobile handset market.

"We see a huge opportunity in the  Indian device market. Our devices portfolio is divided in four categories, namely mobile broadband, handsets, convergence terminal and video products. This is just a beginning of our entry into the open market. We will bring other devices to the market in a phased manner," said A Sethuraman, Executive Director, Huawei Technologies.

The company has launched mobile handsets in two categories, namely Hangout and Android Series. All the Android handsets, except C8500, launched by the company will support 3G services, which are expected to be soon launched in the country. Huawei C8500 will support EVDO services, which are run by CDMA operators in the country.

Huawei has been selling handsets and devices in the Indian market since 2005, but they were all bundled with telecom service providers. Furthermore, since it has entered into the open market for the first time, the company is busy revamping its channel partner strategy for a larger presence in the Indian retail network.
