Instagram’s rollout of a new location-sharing feature has sparked fresh debates over user privacy, prompting the platform’s head, Adam Mosseri, to publicly clarify how it works. The feature, which allows users to share their real-time location, has drawn criticism from privacy advocates concerned about potential misuse and the risk of exposing sensitive personal information.
Responding to the growing chatter, Mosseri posted on Meta-owned Threads, emphasizing that location sharing is turned off by default. Users must explicitly opt in before the feature becomes active, ensuring no location data is shared without their consent. He also noted that users have control over when and with whom they share their location, adding that the tool is designed to enhance user connections, not compromise safety.
The company insists the feature follows Instagram’s broader privacy framework, which includes transparency on permissions and customizable sharing settings. While the platform has long offered geotagging for posts and stories, the new update moves into live location capabilities, similar to features on WhatsApp and other Meta platforms.
Critics argue that even with opt-in controls, live location sharing can create vulnerabilities—particularly for younger users, influencers, and individuals in high-risk environments. Security experts warn that such features could be exploited for stalking, harassment, or other malicious purposes if not used cautiously.
Instagram has stated that it will continue refining the feature, incorporating user feedback and reinforcing safety reminders during the activation process. The platform is also encouraging users to review their privacy settings regularly and to disable location sharing whenever it’s not needed.
The launch underscores the ongoing tension between offering richer, more interactive social media experiences and safeguarding user privacy—a balance Instagram will need to maintain as it continues expanding its real-time, personalized features.
