Memory is an invaluable thing. If one has a stronger memory than others, he is surely better than others in every field. When it comes to IT, it is even better as it expedites the processes by taking quick decisions and to woo the customer by some personal touch. Particularly in the IT training and education space, memory is the most vital thing – be it corporate trainings or capsule courses for any particular technology, etc.
The common perception is that with the increase in years, memory power goes down. However, Venkat J. C. Kasibhatla, the Founder & CEO, Master Trainer of Memory Vision, rubbishes it by saying, “The more is the age, the stronger is the memory, but certainly the absorbing capacity weakens. But the absorption capacity can surely be enhanced with a set of tools and practices. So, there is a science behind enhancing one’s memory at any point of time.” He encourages people to join his sessions and one can feel the difference.
According to Venkat, memory enhancement is an ancient science. In Greco-Roman civilization, the techniques of memory enhancement were very popular; so also in the ancient Indian civilization. This is perhaps the reason why people were able to remember and recite the entire Veda and Upanishad and these were being passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth. Unless you have powerful techniques, you cannot remember so big and complex things.
As Venkat says, in India, those are guarded as secrets and restricted to some families and the outsiders did not have any access to it. However, he has been able to get hold of those techniques and got some help from the books of world’s renowned memory trainers like Harry Lorayne and Tony Buzan and made them very easy for the people.
Today, he is the only person in India to train people in memory enhancement and has taken it as a business for his livelihood. Following in his footsteps, his two sons Nishant Kasibhatla and Anant Kasibhatla have also joined him and taken this legacy to other countries like Malaysia and Singapore. Nishant Kasibhatla, who is the CEO & Trainer of the Singapore chapter, is also a World Record Holder and the first and only Grandmaster of Memory and International Master of Memory in Singapore. He is also author of the best-selling book Instant Memory Improvement and two Audio CDs on memory techniques for students. Anant Kasibhatla is taking care of activities in Malaysia. Physically, they are present in three countries, but they have already done the memory enhancement sessions in eleven countries.
Venkat never inherited these techniques from his ancestors, but the curiosity and his personal hobby have helped him to reach this position today. He recounts, “When it started, I was in a government job in Hyderabad. As a personal hobby, I was showing the tricks to the public in different shows but later on I realized it could grow big and can actually help people improve their memory. Thus, I moved to Delhi and ultimately I had to quit my government job.” According to him, to memorize complex things is not a miracle. It is only a practice with certain techniques, but nobody wishes to adopt them.
He adds, “For example, if I ask somebody to learn a word consisting of 100 characters, the response will be: ‘that is not my cup of tea’. Many people do not even attempt to do that, but with the help of these techniques it becomes a very simple piece of job.”
“The beauty is that skill can be transformed. I do a workshop for two days. Within two days of workshop, I transfer the skills and all my participants are able to remember 30-50 digit characters at the end of the workshop,” says Venkat. “This is not only restricted to remembering the numbers, but any kind of complex matters can be remembered.” The science behind it is called mnemonics.
Venkat has been conducting workshops for the last 13–14 years. He admits that memory can neither be improved nor there is any necessity for improving memory because everybody is born with excellent capacity of memory. The only thing one needs is to put that in use.
It is for everybody and for all age groups to adopt the techniques. Whatever thing one does in life, s/he requires memory to retain it. Though the IT industry is making memory redundant, people are becoming the victim of memory loss. For example, remembering password is a tough task. Everybody today has a lot of external memory including mobile phones, MP3 players, etc., but there was a survey in the US some time back that every executive spends at least 20 minutes searching for articles like keys, pens before he starts his work. In large organizations like IBM where thousands of employees are working and if they waste so much of time in their office hours, they must be wasting many manhours of the company. That is a colossal loss. That can be prevented if memory enhancement techniques are available to all the employees.
In the Indian enterprises, Venkat has done camps in Hughes Software, Airtel and TCS. Many of his clients do come back again and again. Today, NTPC is the biggest client in India.
Finally…
As the Internet is influencing everybody’s life, whether these techniques can be imparted through Internet? He says, “It is also possible to do it through Internet, though the impact will be less. But what is required is practice. Internet is an advantage for reaching to multiple people at a single shot.”
His sessions are not also very costly as he charges only Rs.50,000/- for a two-day workshop of 21 participants. For virtual classroom, the pricing will be much better as he can reach to more participants at a time.
