Frontier AI models are rapidly changing cybersecurity economics. Tasks that once required skilled researchers weeks or months—discovering vulnerabilities, analyzing code and developing exploits—can increasingly be accelerated through AI-assisted automation.

This creates a particularly serious challenge for network infrastructure. Routers, firewalls, VPN gateways, switches and other edge devices sit at the core of enterprise connectivity and often possess highly privileged access.

An attacker who compromises this layer may gain visibility into network traffic, credentials, connected systems and security architecture. A single infrastructure vulnerability can therefore potentially provide a pathway to multiple enterprise assets.

AI further compresses the vulnerability window. Models can assist with code analysis, vulnerability discovery, exploit development and attack adaptation, reducing the time defenders have between vulnerability disclosure and attempted exploitation.

The security model must consequently shift from patch-and-react toward continuous exposure management. Organizations need faster vulnerability prioritization, automated patching, segmentation and real-time monitoring of infrastructure behavior.

AI must also fight AI. Defensive models can continuously identify anomalies, prioritize exploitable weaknesses and accelerate incident response before attackers achieve persistence.

The emerging cybersecurity reality is a machine-speed contest between attack and defence. When vulnerabilities can potentially be operationalized rapidly, resilience will depend on detecting, validating and mitigating weaknesses equally fast.
