The public sector broadcast, All India Radio (AIR), has announced to launch an SMS-based service on mobile phones for registered users across the country. This service will send news alerts to users three times a day. With this SMS based news service, AIR aims to expand its reach throughout India. Every SMS send will have 3 to 4 news headlines along with an advertisement tag.
The marketing division of AIR would try to sell the advertising tags which would accompany the news alerts. According to officials, the advertisement tag may generate revenues as the service becomes popular.
Sources said that AIR has already obtained permission from TRAI to send bulk news messages under transactional messages category.
Officials further revealed that this news service will require a huge database to store details of registered users.
