New beta add-in integrates Claude directly into Microsoft Word, enabling drafting, editing, and analysis of complex documents with citations, tracked changes, and cross-app capabilities across Excel and PowerPoint.
Anthropic has launched a new productivity tool called Claude for Word, bringing its AI assistant directly into Microsoft Word as an add-in. Currently available in beta, the feature is restricted to users on Team and Enterprise plans. It is designed to streamline professional document workflows, including legal reviews, financial reporting, and iterative editing processes.
The tool integrates Claude into Word’s sidebar, allowing users to draft, revise, and refine documents without leaving the application. Anthropic says the system is built to maintain formatting integrity while offering intelligent assistance for complex, multi-section documents.
AI-powered document intelligence and editing tools
Claude for Word enables users to interact directly with documents through natural language prompts. It can summarise commercial terms, identify specific clauses, and answer questions with clickable citations that point to exact sections in the document. The feature also supports semantic navigation, allowing users to locate provisions across themes such as data retention or termination clauses.
Another key capability is iterative editing, where users can highlight text and request modifications such as shortening paragraphs or removing passive voice. The AI ensures edits are applied only to selected sections while preserving surrounding formatting, numbering, and style consistency.
The tool also supports tracked changes within Word’s native review system, enabling users to accept or reject AI-generated edits individually. In addition, it can process comment threads, interpret context, and respond with suggested revisions directly within the document.
Claude for Word also offers cross-application integration with Excel and PowerPoint, enabling users to pull data from spreadsheets into reports or convert documents into presentation slides seamlessly.
Enterprise use cases and safety considerations
While the tool enhances productivity, Anthropic has advised caution as the feature remains in beta. It is not recommended for final legal filings, high-stakes client deliverables, or documents containing sensitive data without human review. The company has also highlighted potential risks, including prompt injection attacks, where malicious content in external files could influence AI behaviour.
To use Claude for Word, individual users can install it via the Microsoft Marketplace and activate it through Word’s add-ins menu after signing in with a Claude account. Enterprise deployment requires administrators to roll it out through the Microsoft 365 Admin Centre.
With this launch, Anthropic is expanding Claude’s presence in enterprise productivity suites, positioning it as a direct competitor in the growing AI-assisted office software ecosystem.
