The restless wait for iPhone 5 is over, as the latest iPhone from Apple went on sale in different parts of the world, with Australia becoming the first outside the US where buyers got their hands on it.

Apple’s Sydney store witnessed long lines formed for the opening of the store with newly launched iPhone 5. The company has booked more than 2 million pre-orders for the device in the first 24 hours, double the first-day sales of the previous iPhone 4S.

With a screen size of 4-inches and far slimmer and lighter than the previous version, the iPhone 5 supports 4G mobile network. The iPhone also has a number of updated softwares along with Apple's new in-house maps feature.

Apple claims that the iPhone is its highest-margin product and accounts for half of its annual revenue. The company said that it would make initial deliveries of the iPhone 5 on Friday in the United States and most of the major European markets, such as France, Germany and Britain. The phone then will go on sale on September 28 in 22 other countries.

Apple plans to sell the new phone in 100 countries by the end of the year.
