Apple limits iPhone purchases to two per customer in India ahead of foldable launch

Cap applies across the company’s entire online iPhone range, not just the new iPhone Duo, as the tech giant prepares for its first foldable handset’s retail debut on October 23 amid heavy demand

Apple has introduced a ceiling of two iPhones per customer on its online store in India, a restriction that covers every model currently on sale and arrives just days before its first foldable phone reaches stores.

The rule was spotted on the company’s website ahead of the October 23 retail launch of the iPhone Duo. It is not confined to the new foldable or to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and extends to older models in the lineup as well.

What shoppers can and cannot do

The limit is calculated on the overall number of iPhones in a customer’s cart, not on each model separately. A buyer may therefore order two units of the same handset, or pair two different ones, such as an iPhone Duo with an iPhone 18 Pro. The same arrangement holds for other models, including the iPhone 17.

Attempting to add a third phone, even of a different variant, brings up a prompt on the store page. It states that a maximum of two iPhones can be bought per customer and asks the shopper to reduce the total quantity before proceeding to checkout.

The practical effect is felt most by those who intended to buy several devices in a single transaction. Families purchasing for multiple members, or individuals buying phones as gifts, will need to plan their orders around the two-unit ceiling when buying directly from Apple.

Reasons behind the move

Apple has not publicly offered an explanation for the new rule. Industry observers, however, note that such caps are commonly used to deter bulk purchases by resellers and to keep stock available for ordinary buyers during the crucial early weeks of a product’s sale.

The company has taken similar steps in the past. When the very first iPhone went on sale in 2007, Apple restricted buyers to two units each, a measure aimed at curbing resale.

The latest restriction also coincides with reports of robust interest in the foldable device. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo opened on October 16, and according to reports, delivery estimates slipped into January soon after bookings began, pointing to supply that may remain tight well beyond launch day.

For now, shoppers hoping to secure a foldable at launch should factor in both the purchase cap and extended delivery timelines. Customers who want more than two phones would have to look to other sales channels, where Apple’s online limit does not apply.
