Apple revives relationship with its former graphic chip designer
UK based chipmaker Imagination Technologies on Thursday has announced that it has entered into a new licensing agreement with Apple.
In a short statement, the company made this confirmation of having entered into a multi- year, multi licensing agreement with Apple.
The semiconductor company previously designed GPUs, which are graphics chips for Apple’s iPhones and iPads, but Apple decided to cut ties with the firm in 2017 to develop such processing units in-house.
Both the companies were into dispute earlier over the GPU designs that Apple licenses from Imagination for its iOS devices.
Last year Imagination Technologies said that if Apple refused to pay royalties to the company, for the latest generation of the devices, there could be some ‘material uncertainty’ about whether a chip designer would be able to survive.
Under the new deal, Apple will use Imagination’s intellectual property in exchange for license fees.
