Finally, the report card of the Indian IT industry is out. The domestic market stands at Rs.73,135 crore, which shows almost 32-per cent growth over the last year. The sale of PCs touched 6.3 million units and out of this notebooks accounted for 1.11 million.
I have highlighted the PCs and notebooks here because these two products are the mascots of the IT industry, but this is the tip of the IT iceberg. There are a lot many more products and solutions which remain at the back end like servers, storage, networking solutions, security solutions, accessories, components, etc.
This growth has come from the traditional IT market. If one makes a study of the B- and C-class cities, these places have not opened up to the fullest extent. Even the entire
eastern region of India lags behind when compared to the rest of the country. Another potential sector is the government. It has also not grown to the desired extent. Taking all these factors into account, 32-per cent growth year on year seems quite feasible.
In this issue, VARIndia has tried to bring out some positive aspects of eastern India from the IT point of view. It is viewed that the eastern states are considered laggards in IT implementation, but, on the contrary, they are catching up very fast. From the e-Governance perspective, the states of Orissa, West Bengal and Assam have already put up a good show.
The Indian IT export market has also grown exponentially to touch Rs.1,53,744 crore. These states have also started contributing to the IT exports of the country. Software developing and services companies like TCS, Infosys, Satyam and MindTree have already set up their camps in these states. Major product vendors like Microsoft, Oracle, Intel, Cisco, etc. have come out with special packages for these states. Apart from continuing commercial transactions in these states, these companies are also involved in high-tide CSR activities.
Thus, the message is that once these states come into full blossom, the IT market of India will be stupendously huge, and it is going to happen very soon.
