ChatGPT Faces DDos Attack
2023-11-10ChatGPT is currently down due to a DDoS attack. OpenAI is working to mitigate the attack and restore service as soon as possible. The company first announced that it was experiencing issues on November 8 and continues to be working on a fix.
While the company didn't immediately provide any details on the root cause of these incidents, OpenAI confirmed earlier today that they're linked to ongoing distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
A DDoS attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service, or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic. This can make it difficult or impossible for legitimate users to access the target.
According to OpenAI's status checker, the company is dealing with periodic outages due to abnormal traffic reflective of a DDoS or Distributed Denial-of-service Attack. "We are continuing work to mitigate this," the company wrote at 10:49 PM ET on Wednesday.
The reasons for why ChatGPT was targeted by a DDoS attack are unknown. However, it is possible that the attackers were motivated by a variety of factors, such as:
● To disrupt the use of ChatGPT by legitimate users
● To damage OpenAI's reputation
● To extort money from OpenAI
●To test their own DDoS capabilities
"We are dealing with periodic outages due to an abnormal traffic pattern reflective of a DDoS attack. We are continuing work to mitigate this," OpenAI said in an update to an incident report published 11 hours ago.
There has been no update from OpenAI since then, but it seems ChatGPT is still down for web users and those trying to access the new GPT Builder.
