Today, business is becoming more complex. This phenomenon is being accompanied by declining profit margins. Against this backdrop, enterprises have found a saviour in cloud computing. With the cloud on the way to become more pervasive, businesses have found a new IT business model which has stood them in good stead in creating more value, achieving cost benefits and business agility.
As of now, about 40 per cent of the total IT spending in India comes from large enterprises and it is also expected of them that they will make substantial investment in cloud computing as well. According to estimates, IaaS seems to be a preferred choice as cloud delivery model amongst large Indian enterprises. This can be gauged from the IaaS market which is set to grow at 40 per cent CAGR by 2015. Enterprises in the BFSI, healthcare, manufacturing, ICT, government and education sectors are expected to opt for cloud, thanks to the increase in IT spending coupled with the growing need for cloud-based services. A positive trend that is emerging these days is that decision for opting for cloud does not necessarily rest with the IT departments. It is slowing become the prerogative of the business decision makers who are now having a major say in the adoption of cloud computing. In fact, an ideal cloud evangelist seems to have switched side from IT to business.
Today's organizations are facing an exponential increase in the amount of data driven largely by the explosion of unstructured data in the form of digital content. This has resulted in Big Data movement which aims to push the bounds of traditional storage system capacity and performance and create paradigm shifts in the way data is managed, stored and accessed. Today less than 1% of world's data is analyzed and less than 20% is protected. This translates a mind-blowing benefit from Big Data.
As businesses are in the process of allowing employees to bring their personally owned computers, smartphones and tablets into the workplace and access corporate applications, the popularity of BYOD is increasing fast. This will allow application availability at any time, from anywhere, and will help business slash procurement costs. However, the increasing popularity of these devices will create several problems for IT executives as they attempt to mitigate risk. When it comes to BYOD, one of the most overriding threats is the loss and theft of these devices. So, it will be in the fitness of things that they must weigh the pros and cons of BYOD.
I also take this opportunity to laud the efforts of Social Network Facebook its efforts to help the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) bust an international criminal ring that infected 11 million computers around the world, resulting in the loss of more than $850 million.
As we are about to ring out the old and ring in the new with 2013 approaching fast, let us say good-bye to the year and move ahead with a strong belief in the BYOD( Bring your own Devices) module to be more successful.
Wish you a very happy New Year.
