Google confirms merging ChromeOS and Android
2025-07-15
Google is finally merging ChromeOS and Android into a unified operating system. This information was confirmed by a Google executive. This unified approach mirrors Google’s integrated ecosystem, where devices seamlessly work together through consistent software experiences. This might be the first time that Google has publicly acknowledged plans to merge the two platforms. The tech giant’s plan to merge Chrome OS into Android also comes as Android itself gains several features for large displays.
Sameer Samat, President of Google’s Android Ecosystem, while confirming in a recent interview that Chrome OS will no longer remain a stand‐alone operating system, stated that future Chromebooks and tablets are expected to run on an Android-based platform, giving users a seamless cross-device experience.
In the interview, Samat was particularly interested in knowing how the interviewer utilizes his ecosystem of iPhone, MacBook and iPad to get his work done.
“I asked because we’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform, and I am very interested in how people are using their laptops these days and what they’re getting done,” Samat stated.
This shift builds on Google’s architecture convergence, Chrome OS already shares Android’s Linux kernel and components. Now the company is advancing it further, aiming to deliver a desktop-optimized Android experience that supports a richer feature set including Linux apps, browser extensions, multi-window UI, and improved external display handling.
