Gujarat government is reportedly holding talks with Foxconn, days after it withdrew from a joint venture with Vedanta which was set up to produce semiconductors in India. These talks come weeks after Micron Technology said it will invest up to $825 million in a semiconductor testing and packaging facility in the state.
Vijay Nehra, Secretary of the Science and Technology Department, Gujarat said “We are in contact with multiple prospective investors, including Foxconn as the state is uniquely positioned to attract top chipmakers.”
Meanwhile, Foxconn has not yet confirmed the matter.
Commenting on the Foxconn- Vedanta breakup, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that Foxconn's back out from Vedanta’s joint venture will have no impact on India's semiconductor plans as both the companies are new players in the sector with no prior semiconductor experience or technology.
The breakup of the JV was a setback for Modi's vision to establish India as a semiconductor manufacturing hub. However, Foxconn said later it would apply for India chip incentives on its own and was exploring new partners.
