Giving a speech at a private dinner in London at a fund-raising reception for Sentebale, Prince Harry said, āOur hope was to continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth and military associations without public funding. Unfortunately that was not possibleā.

He further said that the decision taken was not easy, and was taken after much thought. "The decision that I have made for my wife and myself to step back is not one I made lightly," he said.

"It was after so many months of talks and after so many years of challenges and I know I haven't always got it right, but as far as this goes there really was no other option as I and my wife Megan Markel seek a more peaceful life," he said.
