IBM has introduced and made available the fourth-generation DS8000 enterprise disk platform. IBM V7000, the new offering from IBM, is a high-performance storage that is easy to set up. Built with advanced storage efficiency and data protection capabilities, it is a modular midrange storage that grows as the needs of the customers grow.
Starting with only one enclosure, this platform can be expanded easily by adding up to 9 expansion enclosures. It can expand up to 240 drives and can intermix 3.5" and 2.5" drive enclosures. "Available for the first time in a midrange offering, V7000 offers storage virtualization, incredible ease of use and also easy tier," says Sandeep K. Dutta, Vice-President, IBM Systems Storage (Systems and Technology Group), IBM India/SA .
Backed by continuous innovation and investments, the complete range of storage offerings from IBM boasts of tape storage, Entry / Midrange storage (DS5000, DS3000), High-end (DS8000, XIV, SONAS) and Appliances (Real Time Compression, SAN Volume Controller, ProtecTIER Deduplication). Crafting its big presence in the Storage market, IBM has made big acquisitions like 2007 Softek, Princeton Softek and Novus Consulting Group. It has emerged as the No. 1 vendor in India in the External Disk Storage space in FY 2009 and also grabbing a market share of 24.1% in the first half of 2010.
IBM's own experience says that it has managed to cut costs by 50% and increased storage utilization from 50% up to 90% with storage virtualization, thin provisioning and pooling. And this is what it expects to do with its new offering.
