IDEMIA has taken a significant step toward securing the future of digital payments by becoming the first company to achieve EMVCo certification for a payment card platform offering access to post-quantum cryptography (PQC). The milestone signals growing industry preparedness for emerging quantum computing threats.
As quantum computing advances, conventional public-key cryptographic algorithms could eventually become vulnerable to powerful quantum attacks. Financial institutions, payment networks and card manufacturers are therefore exploring quantum-resistant technologies to safeguard sensitive transactions and long-term digital trust.
The EMVCo certification represents an important development in payment security, demonstrating that IDEMIA's platform meets applicable industry specifications. However, certification should not be interpreted as proof that every payment transaction is already protected by post-quantum cryptography.
For banks and payment processors, the announcement highlights the importance of crypto-agility—the ability to upgrade cryptographic mechanisms without disrupting existing payment infrastructure. This becomes particularly critical for payment cards with long operational lifecycles and extensive global deployment.
