The Electronic Personnel License (EPL) aims to improve safety, security, and operational efficiency in Indian aviation, offering increased convenience, transparency, and efficiency for pilots while ensuring India stays ahead in aviation technology advancements
Marking a major step toward digital transformation in India’s aviation sector, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu introduced the Electronic Personnel License (EPL) for pilots on February 20. With this initiative, India becomes the second country in the world, after China, to implement EPL for flight crews.
The EPL is expected to enhance the safety, security, and operational efficiency of Indian aviation. Minister Naidu highlighted that the initiative would bring increased convenience, transparency, and efficiency for pilots while ensuring that India remains at the forefront of technological advancements in the aviation industry. "The launch of EPL by the DGCA is not just a step forward for aviation but also for the future of digitalization across sectors," Naidu said.
EPL to fuel aviation’s future
The introduction of EPL comes at a time when India’s civil aviation industry is experiencing rapid growth. Minister Naidu noted that with the rise in domestic air travel, India will require at least 20,000 more pilots in the coming years to meet the growing demand. India is among the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, and this increasing demand for pilots makes initiatives like the EPL essential for the sector's future.
India's aviation sector is set for further expansion, with plans for 50 new airports over the next five years and 120 new domestic destinations in the coming decade. This will significantly increase the need for qualified pilots, reinforcing the importance of EPL in managing this demand.
Naidu also spoke about the growing role of technology in transforming the aviation industry, from operations to regulation. He mentioned future plans like the development of digital twin systems for airports, which will enhance real-time decision-making.
A senior Indian airline pilot welcomed the EPL, saying it would streamline processes and allow pilots to focus on what truly matters—ensuring safe and efficient travel for passengers.
