The feature will soon extend to Messenger, using the same passkey setup.
Meta has officially rolled out passkey authentication for Facebook users on iOS and Android, marking a major leap toward a password-free future. This latest Facebook security update enables users to log in using biometric verification methods such as fingerprint, facial recognition, or device PIN, eliminating the need for traditional passwords or SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA).
Meta passkeys are securely stored on the user’s device, providing a more secure and convenient login experience. This method significantly reduces the risk of phishing, password leaks, and unauthorized access, offering a robust layer of protection for personal accounts. Unlike conventional passwords, passkeys cannot be reused, guessed, or intercepted in transit.
The company confirmed that Messenger will soon adopt the same passkey setup, aligning with Meta’s broader plan to implement passwordless authentication across its platforms. WhatsApp has already introduced passkey support, making Facebook the next major platform in Meta’s ecosystem to embrace this new login technology.
Meta joins the growing ranks of tech giants like Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Adobe, who have recently adopted passkeys as part of an industry-wide shift toward stronger and user-friendly security standards. These companies are leveraging FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance protocols to promote seamless and secure digital experiences.
By phasing out passwords in favor of passkey-based login systems, Meta aims to create a safer online environment, reduce user friction, and enhance account protection. As cyber threats become more sophisticated, this update is a timely move toward securing the billions of user accounts in Meta’s ecosystem while simplifying authentication for everyday users.
With this rollout, Facebook becomes part of the growing movement redefining digital identity and login systems for the next generation of internet users.
