Huang’s visit follows Nvidia’s historic $4 trillion valuation, cementing its global AI dominance, as the company’s ability to navigate complex US-China relations becomes increasingly crucial to sustaining its momentum in the evolving tech landscape
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is set to hold a media briefing in Beijing on July 16, marking his second official visit to China this year. The visit underscores the chipmaker’s continued commitment to the Chinese market, despite escalating geopolitical tensions and regulatory hurdles between the US and China.
Huang’s previous trip in April emphasized the strategic significance of China to Nvidia’s global growth, a sentiment reinforced by the company’s recent annual report, which revealed that China contributed $17 billion—13% of Nvidia’s total revenue—in the fiscal year ending January 26.
However, the visit comes at a sensitive time. Since 2022, the US government has restricted the export of Nvidia’s most advanced semiconductor technologies to China, citing national security concerns over potential military applications. Earlier this year, Washington also blocked sales of Nvidia’s H20 chips—its most powerful AI chip permitted for Chinese customers—tightening its grip on the export of high-performance computing tools.
Huang’s visit draws US scrutiny
Huang’s upcoming appearance is being closely monitored by both Washington and Beijing. On July 11, two US senators—representing a bipartisan stance—sent a letter to Huang urging him to avoid engaging with Chinese companies linked to the country’s military or intelligence sectors. They also requested that he steer clear of entities currently listed on the US restricted export list.
Despite these pressures, Chinese demand for Nvidia products remains strong. Domestic competitors like Huawei are stepping up efforts in GPU development, but Nvidia’s CUDA platform continues to be a major draw for China’s AI developers and cloud computing firms.
Huang’s visit also comes on the heels of Nvidia’s historic achievement: reaching a $4 trillion market valuation last week, a milestone that cements the company’s dominance in the global AI race. As the AI boom continues to shape the tech landscape, Nvidia’s navigation of US-China dynamics will be pivotal for its next phase of growth.
