OpenAI reportedly developing smartphone with artificial intelligence agents

OpenAI is reportedly developing a smartphone designed to rival players like Apple and Samsung by focusing on AI-led experiences. According to early industry insights, the device may prioritise task completion through an AI agent rather than relying on traditional apps.

The proposed device is expected to revolve around an AI agent powered by ChatGPT, enabling users to interact through a single interface that understands intent and executes tasks across multiple services. This marks a potential shift from app-centric usage to outcome-driven interactions. The system is also expected to continuously interpret user context, such as behaviour and usage patterns to deliver real-time, personalised responses.

It is reported that OpenAI is working with chipmakers such as MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop processors that will support on-device AI tasks such as handling smaller models and managing power efficiency. More intensive tasks may be offloaded to cloud-based AI, creating a hybrid architecture that balances performance with efficiency.

Luxshare is reportedly associated with the company for system design and manufacturing. It may also oversee device assembly and coordinate hardware integration. However, established players in the supply chain may continue to hold their current positions in competing ecosystems.

A major driver behind OpenAI’s move could be the ability to tightly control both hardware and software, enabling deeper integration of its AI models. Additionally, smartphones generate continuous streams of user data, which could significantly enhance real-time AI capabilities. Given the scale of the smartphone market, it also offers a powerful platform for deploying AI services.

The device remains in early development, with key specifications and supply chain decisions expected to be finalised by 2026 or early 2027. If plans proceed, mass production could begin around 2028.
