It is the 15th year in a row that VARINDIA is coming up with the VOICE OF INDIAN VARs in its April 2023 Issue, where we have gathered the feedback and opinions from Value-Added Resellers (VARs) in metros, A and B class cities in the country . VARs are companies that add value to products or services before selling them to end customers, such as by providing customization, integration, or consulting services.
The Channel scorecard this time features fifteen different product categories. It is the testimonial from the VARs and Partners to measure the performance of the Vendors/OEMs. From what we have gathered, vendors can better understand the needs and preferences of their channel partners and make adjustments to improve their partnerships. This can ultimately lead to increased sales, stronger customer relationships, and a more successful channel strategy.
The scorecard is based on seven important factors - Product Availability, Price Performance, Channel Profitability, Pre-sales support, Training and Certification, Channel Policy and Post-sales Support. However, this report does not reflect any feedback from the end customers.
Channel partners are credited for being the integral part of the success of the corporate’s go-to-market strategy (GTM) for delivering an excellent customer experience. Distributors and value Added Distributors (VADs) also have a very important role to play in the overall growth strategy of the corporates. Partners expect to be treated as individuals and they want to deal with companies who understand who they are and what they are going through and who appreciate that their reality and needs are changing every single day.
Adopting a hyper-personalized marketing strategy powered by data, analytics and AI will give you the insights and capabilities to adapt to your customers’ changing realities in real-time, which is what today’s customers expect.
The scorecard survey finds that vendors who were able to work with partners and provide high quality products at good prices are rewarded with high scores. This year, distributors and sub-distributors, having realized the massive opportunities in E-commerce, Cyber Security and Cloud Computing and Cloud Repatriation at the same time.
The major distributors including Ingram Micro, Redington, Savex Technologies have been positioned as the top three players in the distribution space, while distribution majors including Tech Data, Supertron, RP tech, Inflow, Beetel Teletech, iValue and IRIS Global have been very aggressive in promoting various offerings to the channel from cloud to security as services for enabling digital transformation for industries.
In the past two years we have seen the technology landscape emerging, with focus increasing into Cloud and Cyber security solution space. To complement this sector, there are VADs (Value added Distributors) including RAH Infotech, Technobind, Texonic and Netpoleons who have increased their footprints.
Cloud and Cloud Security become the core of the IT Channel Business
Security in cloud computing is crucial to any company looking to keep its applications and data protected from bad actors. Whereas, digital transformation brings in fundamental changes to know how your business functions and how you deliver value to your users. The partner business in India is poised to grow at a tremendous rate with newer ideas and newer strategies in this space.
Indian tech leaders no longer want to own, build, maintain, and run products on new technologies completely by themselves. The Telecom sector will see major investments. In the past year, 5G announcements and investments in technologies like IoT, Web3, the metaverse, AI, and augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) have had a major impact on telecommunications. However, software and tech consulting and systems integration will slow down.
Digital transformation is serving as a major economic driver while Cloud has been an IT enabler, especially for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). There are increasing cases of cloud repatriation, which is causing a heated debate about the future of cloud services. At the same time, some claim that repatriations indicate declining interest in cloud computing. This point of view suggests that the trend of taking workloads off the public cloud is here to stay and that on-prem hardware and colocation will continue to challenge the "cloud-first" model.
Over the past decade, there has been a shift in the way technology is being deployed and utilized, with a movement from edge and core computing to cloud computing. We have seen a significant shift towards cloud computing, as more and more organizations have adopted cloud-based solutions for their IT needs. This trend is expected to continue in the coming years, with cloud computing becoming an increasingly dominant force in the technology landscape.
Secondly, many companies are integrating IoT (Internet of Things) and 5G technologies into their digital strategies, as these technologies offer significant benefits in terms of increased connectivity, data processing capabilities, and real-time insights.
The Indian E-commerce market is expected to grow from $83 bn in 2022 to $185 bn in 2026 as it is propelled by unified payments interface (UPI) transactions. With this India has emerged as a global leader in payments by developing a real-time payments (RTP) infrastructure.
We can't deny the fact that Distributors and Value Added Distributors (VADs) play a very important role in the overall growth strategy of the Corporates. Moreover, channel partners are integral to the overall success of the corporate’s go-to-market strategy for delivering an excellent customer experience. At the same time, many OEMs feel that the Omni - Channel business model with a robust partner ecosystem is part of their channel growth agenda.
In this year 2023, channel partners should keep in mind that consolidation within the channel will continue, both within the partner community and with the IT vendor community. This is going to impact the dynamics in the industry going forward on a worldwide basis. Channel partners will need to remain flexible and adaptable, which will eventually create both opportunities and challenges. The strength of relationships between channel partners and their preferred vendors will be a factor in the outcomes of consolidation.
The channel further wants to work with vendors that are easy to do business with. Post-pandemic, as expectations change, there is going to be a shift in which vendors have to create a conducive environment for the channel to work in. Channel partners want cloud-like consumption models that are easy for them to use, easy for them to deploy, and easy for them to bill. They also expect reliable co-sell models that will provide proper support.
Methodology of the Channel Scorecard
The survey sample we have considered is from the partners and VARs who are directly dealing in the partner ecosystem. The report doesn't include the sales generated through direct deal by the inside sales team of the corporates (certain corporates claim that they are 100% Partner focused company, which is untrue) and sales that happened from various e-commerce sites in India (the ecommerce business is a big chunk and the figures are very difficult to find and the actual business cannot be validated).
The Channel Scorecard report summarizes that most of the vendors have cleared their old inventories through the E-commerce players to reach to the remotest parts in the country, whereas several distributors and partners have opened a separate entity for expanding their business. In some cases they clear their inventories by offering lucrative offers.
Dell Technologies committed to grow its channel footprint by enhancing partner experience
Anil Sethi, Vice President & General Manager, Channels - India, Dell Technologies
“The Channel ecosystem has played a pivotal role in expanding our footprint. We are committed to grow this further by enhancing partner experience levels and building services led go-to-market strategies, aided by new incentives and distribution support. In 2022, industries across the globe have accelerated their transformation journey, embraced multicloud architectures and started adopting as-a-service models. To complement industry needs, we have also streamlined and enhanced the partner experience across multiple program tracks allowing solution providers, CSPs and OEM partners to enjoy one regional incentive structure, one tier structure, and one set of tier requirements.
We launched our 2023 Partner Program in February with a renewed focus - Together, We Stop at Nothing. This celebrates the sixth anniversary of the program and its continued success with the partner community. We are building upon a position of partner strength. In Q3 of 2022, partners delivered approximately 50% of our overall net revenue, accelerated double digit storage growth, and helped us secure #1 positions in the majority of the industry’s critical IT infrastructure categories.

“The Elastic Partner Program sets itself apart in the industry in several ways. Our free and open codebase provides partners with a vast market of prospects, while our skilled and passionate global Elastic community creates a positive and collaborative partnership experience. There’s also our partner-friendly sales uplift policy that ensures our partners are rewarded for their effort in a fair & consistent manner, while our tiered structure of elite, premier, and select partners recognizes them based on their capability and certification, and not revenue capacity alone. We focus on enabling partners to generate revenue through services, making our Partner Program practice-oriented and expertise-driven.
At Elastic, partners have access to established channels of communication, such as partner surveys, partner helpdesk, and regular partner meetings - where they can provide feedback on their experiences, challenges, and suggestions for improvement. Evolution of Cloud Computing: A Bit of Everything, And More
Shrikant Shitole, CEO - iValue Infosolutions
Here a cloud, there a cloud, everywhere a cloud cloud!
THAT could well be a technocrat’s funny take on the popular children’s rhyme ‘Old MacDonald’. But it is definitely not far from how ubiquitous cloud services have become in the contemporary world.
Cloud computing might sound like a noveau concept, but the truth is that its origin can be traced back to the 1950s when companies started experimenting with distributed computing. It soon graduated to mainframe, cluster and then grid computing before leapfrogging into virtualisation in the 1980s.
In fact, virtualisation was a gamechanger when it came to cloud computing. The creation of a virtual layer over physical allowed users to run multiple programs simultaneously. The other significant pivot came in the early 2000s with the entry of Web 2.0. Suddenly static web pages became more interactive, dynamic and flexible. Data and apps had to be processed in real-time, which gave cloud computing a massive fillip.
The Many Facets Of Cloud
The thrust that cloud computing got during the pandemic has seen many enterprises increasingly earmark a larger part of their annual IT budget for cloud offerings and capabilities. However, even before COVID-19 struck, many companies were already banking on public clouds to share their resources globally while maintaining its privacy.
These resources, which often include the hardware, software and associated infrastructure, are owned and operated by a third-party cloud service provider like Microsoft, Azure and delivered over the internet. This growth is unsurprising since public cloud has low asset costs for companies where they only pay for the service they use, without having to worry about the upkeep of the infrastructure either.
Private clouds like HP Data Centers are an internal computing network for selective users within an organization. The best analogy for this is a gated community with a strong security perimeter in and muscled watch guards manning all entry and exit points.
Next up is the hybrid cloud environment, which takes elements of public and private cloud environments and fuses it with on-premises infrastructure to create a centralized, distributed computing environment. Companies like IBM provide this win-win offering to enterprises, allowing them to run their legacy or cloud-native workloads with equal ease.
And then there is edge computing, which basically means running fewer processes in the cloud and shifting as many to a network’s edge. By bringing it to local levels like a user’s computer or an IoT device, it reduces the long-distance communication between a client and server, thus bringing down latency and improving performance.
What’s Up In The Clouds
The definition of cloud computing has changed with ease, accessibility and scalability emerging as distinguishing attributes. This means that companies are constantly seeking cloud environments that will work best for their applications, rather than force fitting things the other way around. A hybrid cloud architecture circumvents the prohibitive switching costs associated with shifting vendors. It also provides companies with a fail-safe option in case a vendor breaches their SLAs and provides them with a choice of service providers best suited for each workload. Edge computing will also become more predominant in the future and are likely to become a lot more influential. 5G’s rollout has already given network connectivity a massive boost, and now technocrats will be hard pressed to add AI and ML to applications to respond to user queries faster.
All Hands-On AI
ChatGPT’s debut has brought one phrase on everyone’s lips generative AI. Needless to say, it has found its place in cloud management too. As cloud environments become more complex, generative AI can chip in to automate regular tasks like resource allocation and bandwidth management. There are many areas where AI can come in handy in the cloud environment. However, the biggest challenge is that many technocrats are still unsure how to leverage it, especially as it gets more sophisticated with each passing week. Nonetheless, it is undeniable that when the cloud and AI come together, they can jointly go a long way in democratizing technology and making it more prevalent across the ecosystem.

CONSUMER LAPTOP
Remote working, online studying fuelling the demand for consumer laptops
The increase in demand for laptops can be attributed to more people working from home, as well as new government initiatives towards remote learning for students. The third-largest market worldwide, India’s dynamic nature and the accelerating push towards digitisation will fuel this potential business opportunity. The anticipation of a global recession, increased inflation and higher interest rates have had a major impact on PC demand. Since many consumers already have relatively new PCs that were purchased during the pandemic, a lack of affordability is superseding any motivation to buy, causing consumer PC demand to drop to its lowest level in years.
The surge in the adoption of laptops in educational institutions and increase in consumer demand primarily drove the growth of the laptop market in the last few years, during and after the pandemic. Though adoption of smartphones and tablets hamper the market growth to some extent, they cannot take away the entire share of the laptop market. However, owing to a huge shift in consumer trends, the gaming PC market has become much bigger than the consumer laptop market. In 2022, the demand for gaming units in India increased to 900 thousand units, as compared to 40 thousand units in 2016. PC shipments in India fell by 11.7% year-on-year (YoY) in the Q3 2022, the first drop after eight consecutive quarters of growth, as per IDC.

x86 SERVER
India has proven to be one of the key markets for the x86 server market
The server market is evolving with the introduction of "As-a-Service" and "pay per use" models by server companies. The fourth-quarter 2022 global server shipments declined 7.1% from the prior quarter and 4.3% from the prior year. According to IDC, the worldwide server market spending will continue to decline in 2023 but is expected to continue with a CAGR of 7.7% in the coming five years. Amid the global economic slump, large US- and China-based data center operators are likely to further cut back their server procurement, with the demand from server brands also going to see a drop. IDC expects hyperscalers and cloud builders to do refreshes and expansion of their infrastructure steadily through 2026.
With businesses continuing to adopt a digital-first mindset, India has proven to be one of the key markets for the x86 server market. Professional services vertical spending was led by investments from fintech, cloud service providers (CSPs), telecom players, and IT/ITeS companies. Investment from banking in the server segment was high due to digitalization and application modernization projects, while the Government was another key vertical that contributed to this growth.
CHANNEL PLAYERS: Dell, HPE, Cisco, Lenovo and Oracle
Key Takeaway: As the business need to run multiple workloads from the edge to the core to the cloud, they need to deploy advanced servers which can optimize AI/ML and IoT processes for them seamlessly.
