Samsung has expanded its consumer storage portfolio in India with the launch of the 990 SSD, offering high-speed PCIe 4.0 performance, improved power efficiency, and capacities up to 2TB for gamers, creators, professionals, and PC enthusiasts.
Samsung India has introduced its latest 990 Solid State Drive (SSD) in the Indian market, targeting gamers, content creators, professionals and DIY PC enthusiasts seeking faster storage performance. The new SSD comes in 1TB and 2TB variants and is designed to deliver high-speed data transfers, enhanced responsiveness and improved power efficiency for demanding workloads.
The launch strengthens Samsung's consumer storage lineup by offering a balanced solution that caters to both performance-intensive applications and everyday computing needs.
"Samsung’s new 990 SSD is an excellent solution for a wide range of users looking to expand their storage for heavy workloads, immersive gaming, high-resolution content creation, and DIY PC builds," said Tommy (Hyoungsuk) Kwon, Vice President of Memory Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics.
High-speed performance for modern workloads
Built on the PCIe 4.0 interface and Samsung's latest V-NAND technology, the Samsung 990 SSD delivers sequential read speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s on the 2TB model, while the 1TB version offers read speeds of up to 7,150 MB/s. Both variants support sequential write speeds of up to 6,450 MB/s, enabling quicker file transfers, faster system responsiveness and reduced application loading times.
The SSD also delivers strong random performance, with the 2TB model achieving up to 850K read and 1,200K write IOPS, while the 1TB version offers up to 700K read and 1,100K write IOPS. These capabilities are expected to benefit users running resource-intensive applications, high-end games and large creative workloads.
Optimized for gaming and content creation
Samsung said the increased storage capacity is designed to address the growing demand for larger applications and modern AAA gaming titles. According to the company, the 2TB variant can accommodate up to 30 games, based on an average game size of 64GB, making it suitable for gamers and digital content creators managing expanding libraries of files and projects.
Beyond performance, the company has also focused on improving energy efficiency. Samsung claims the new 990 SSD delivers up to 38% better power efficiency than the previous 990 PRO model, allowing users to achieve high performance while reducing overall power consumption.
Software support and availability
The SSD is supported by Samsung Magician Software, which provides features such as drive health monitoring, performance optimization, secure data management and seamless data migration. The software is intended to help users maintain optimal SSD performance throughout its lifecycle.
The Samsung 990 SSD will be available in India from the last week of July 2026 in 1TB and 2TB capacities. The 1TB model is priced at an MSRP of ₹25,649, while the 2TB variant carries an MSRP of ₹50,349.
The storage solution features an M.2 (2280) form factor, Samsung's in-house controller, PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 interface, AES 256-bit hardware encryption support, and comes with a three-year limited warranty.
