In a major step toward building an open and inclusive AI ecosystem, Bengaluru-based generative AI startup Sarvam AI has announced plans to open source its large language models (LLMs) developed under the IndiaAI Mission. This landmark move aligns with the Indian government’s broader vision of promoting AI innovation, transparency, and accessibility.

Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, confirmed that government-funded AI models will be made publicly available to developers, researchers, and institutions. The open-source initiative will enable the creation of indigenous AI solutions, helping India build AI systems that understand local languages, culture, and contexts.

Vivek Raghavan, co-founder of Sarvam AI, further clarified that the LLMs will be released under permissible open-source licenses, ensuring wide adoption while maintaining ethical and responsible AI use. This move is expected to empower startups, academic researchers, and enterprises to innovate and build on these foundational models without incurring high development costs.

By releasing these models to the public, Sarvam AI and the IndiaAI Mission aim to reduce dependency on foreign AI platforms and promote the growth of India-centric AI applications. These could range from local language chatbots and AI-powered education tools to government service automation and healthcare support systems.

Open-sourcing large language models is a game-changer for India's artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem. It fosters collaboration, innovation, and skill development across sectors. Moreover, it aligns with the global trend of promoting transparent and ethical AI practices. With this initiative, India takes a bold step toward becoming a global leader in open and responsible AI development, making AI accessible to all — from startups to students and researchers across the nation.
