Shalev Hulio steps down as NSO Group’s CEO
2022-08-23
Israeli spyware firm NSO Group said that its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shalev Hulio is stepping down, with Chief Operating Officer (COO) Yaron Shohat appointed to oversee a reorganisation of the company.
The reorganisation will examine all aspects of its business, including streamlining its operations to ensure NSO remains one of the world’s leading hi-tech cyber intelligence companies, focusing on NATO-member countries, a reference to the 30-member political and military alliance.
A spokesperson from the company confirmed that around 100 employees will be let go as part of the firm’s reorganisation, and Shohat will lead the company until the board appoints a new CEO. The spyware is alleged to have been deployed by foreign governments against dissidents, journalists, diplomats and members of the clergy.
The surveillance firm, which makes Pegasus software, has been facing legal action after allegations that its tools were misused by governments and other agencies to hack mobile phones. However, the company claims its technology is intended to help catch terrorists, paedophiles and hardened criminals. The software is sold only to government agencies to target criminals and terrorists, and sales require Israeli government approval, it added.
