Stripe has reportedly finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, one of the fastest-growing marketplaces and routing platforms for AI models, according to Bloomberg sources — though Stripe has declined to comment publicly, and the final price could still change. The deal is valued at more than $7 billion, a steep jump from OpenRouter's $1.3 billion valuation just three months earlier, and would rank among Stripe's largest acquisitions to date.
OpenRouter has become critical infrastructure for the multi-model AI economy, giving developers a single interface to access and switch among more than 400 models from over 60 providers rather than integrating separately with each one. The company reports over 8 million users and weekly token volume that grew from 5 trillion to 25 trillion in just six months.
The acquisition builds on an existing relationship: OpenRouter has used Stripe's infrastructure since January 2026 for payments, invoicing, tax automation, and fraud protection, with the two companies also collaborating to meter AI-model consumption and translate inference costs into customer billing.
That partnership reveals the larger opportunity. AI applications increasingly consume intelligence like a utility — every prompt and API call generates tokens, computational costs, and ultimately a financial transaction. Combining OpenRouter's routing layer with Stripe's payment infrastructure positions Stripe across both how AI compute is consumed and how it's monetized.
Model routing itself is becoming essential as enterprises realize no single model suits every task — a frontier model for complex reasoning, a cheaper model for routine work — with intelligent routing capable of cutting inference costs by double digits in some deployments, particularly as agentic AI multiplies model calls per task.
The deal signals AI inference becoming a new category of metered digital consumption, much as cloud computing once monetized CPU and bandwidth. Stripe's advantage: unlike hyperscalers or model developers, it has no proprietary frontier model to favor, helping preserve OpenRouter's neutrality — a trust factor that will matter considerably post-acquisition.
