The UAE government has issued an urgent warning regarding the rising threat of espionage and extortion linked to smart home technology. Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity, emphasized that increasing reliance on connected devices has created severe privacy vulnerabilities.
Highlighting the real-world dangers, Al Kuwaiti revealed a distressing case where a hacker hijacked a camera-equipped smart vacuum. The attacker secretly filmed a family inside their own home and used the footage to blackmail them.
Such incidents underscore how common devices—including robotic vacuums and dash cameras—are being weaponized by cybercriminals.
Beyond physical privacy breaches, authorities noted a surge in sophisticated digital fraud. Scammers are increasingly utilizing deepfakes, identity theft, and fake investment schemes involving gold and cryptocurrency to drain victims' savings.
As cybercrime tactics evolve from simple phishing to complex manipulation, users are urged to remain vigilant and implement robust security practices to protect their personal data, homes, and financial assets from these growing digital threats.
