With Apple’s iOS 18.2 update allowing users to set default apps for messaging, calling, email, and browsing, WhatsApp seizes the opportunity to become a primary communication hub beyond Apple’s built-in options
WhatsApp is introducing a major update for iPhone users that allows them to set it as their default app for calls and messages, marking a significant shift in Apple’s ecosystem. The feature, currently available in the beta version (25.8.10.74) through TestFlight, enables users to initiate calls and send messages directly from WhatsApp without switching between multiple apps.
This update comes after Apple introduced changes in iOS 18.2, allowing users to select their preferred default apps for essential functions like messaging, calling, email, and web browsing. Previously, iPhone users were limited to Apple’s built-in Phone and Messages apps, but with this update, WhatsApp is positioning itself as a central communication hub.
How the feature works
Once WhatsApp is set as the default calling and messaging app:
· Tapping a phone number in Contacts or any other app will automatically open WhatsApp instead of Apple’s native Phone or Messages app.
· Users can make calls and send messages directly through WhatsApp without additional steps.
· This change streamlines communication for those who primarily use WhatsApp for personal, group, or business conversations.
Key benefits for users
For millions of iPhone users who rely on WhatsApp as their primary messaging platform, this update offers several advantages:
· Seamless Communication: Eliminates the need to switch between multiple apps for calling and texting.
· Enhanced Privacy: WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption ensures that messages and calls remain secure.
· Cost Efficiency: Unlike traditional phone calls, WhatsApp uses the internet, enabling free international communication.
· Improved Media Sharing: Users can easily send photos, videos, and documents without leaving the app.
Gradual rollout and future expansion
Currently, this feature is limited to beta testers, but a wider release is expected soon. WhatsApp has been expanding its functionality, recently adding a built-in dialer that lets users manually enter phone numbers to check if they are on WhatsApp before calling.
With this move, WhatsApp is reinforcing its position as a dominant communication platform. While there’s no timeline for an Android rollout yet, a similar update could arrive in the near future as WhatsApp continues enhancing user experience across all devices.
