OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is making a massive investment in India with plans to set up a 1 gigawatt (1 GW) data centre and expand its AI infrastructure under the Stargate initiative. This move highlights India’s growing importance in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem, as OpenAI builds a strong local presence backed by strategic partnerships.
According to reports by Reuters and Bloomberg, OpenAI is exploring collaborations with Indian technology and cloud partners to establish a cutting-edge AI data hub in the country. Once operational, the facility is expected to power next-generation generative AI models, enhance ChatGPT performance, and cater to India’s rapidly growing AI user base.
The company, which is backed by Microsoft Azure, has officially registered as a legal entity in India and is actively building a local team of AI experts, engineers, and researchers. OpenAI also confirmed that it will open its first India office in New Delhi by the end of 2025, strengthening its footprint in its second-largest user market after the United States.
The Stargate-branded AI infrastructure project is a cornerstone of OpenAI’s long-term vision for Asia, aimed at boosting cloud computing, AI research, and machine learning development across the region. While the exact location and operational timeline of the India data centre are yet to be disclosed, more details are expected during CEO Sam Altman’s visit to India in September 2025.
With this expansion, India is set to become a key hub for artificial intelligence innovation, data processing, and generative AI development, strengthening its position in the global AI race.
