After being suspended from Columbia for creating an AI tool to cheat in coding interviews, 21-year-old Chungin Lee is now challenging traditional views on technology and fairness, pushing the boundaries of ethics in the professional world
A 21-year-old Columbia University student, Chungin Lee, has raised $5.3 million in funding for his new venture, Cluely, which he claims will "change the definition of cheating." Lee, who was suspended from Columbia for developing an AI tool to cheat in coding interviews, is now pushing the boundaries of the debate surrounding technology and fairness in the professional world.
Known by his alias, Roy Lee, the ambitious student previously built an AI tool called Interview Coder. This tool provided software engineers with real-time assistance during technical interviews on platforms like LeetCode, helping users bypass coding challenges at top tech companies such as Amazon, Meta, and TikTok.
His tool gained significant attention on social media, leading to backlash from major companies, including Meta and Amazon, who labelled the tool as a form of cheating. Ultimately, Lee was suspended from Columbia University and blacklisted by Amazon.
However, rather than backing down, Lee has doubled down on his work, launching a new product called Cluely. This tool is designed to help users "cheat on everything," including job interviews, exams, and even sales calls, by providing hidden in-browser assistance.
Redefining cheating through innovation
Despite the criticism, Lee defended his approach, comparing it to the historical reactions to technological innovations. His startup’s announcement of securing $5.3 million in pre-seed funding came with a defiant message: "They called calculators cheating. They called Google cheating. The world will say the same about AI. We're not stopping."
Lee, who faced significant pushback after launching Interview Coder, shared his personal experience of rejection. "Everyone in my life told me to quit, but I ignored all advice and kept going," he reflected. His determination led him to create Cluely, a tool he believes represents the future of AI-driven assistance in various fields.
Despite the controversy, Lee’s new venture is gaining momentum, and he remains resolute in his vision to reshape the future of technology and professional success.
