Google has upgraded Gemini’s Deep Research tool to analyse information from Gmail, Drive and Chat, enabling users to combine personal files with web data for more contextual research and automated report generation across projects
Google has announced a major expansion to its Gemini AI’s Deep Research tool, transforming it from a web-based assistant into a personalised, multi-source research engine. The update allows the AI to draw insights not only from the internet but also from users’ Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Chat. The feature is already live on desktop, with mobile access expected in the coming days.
Previously, Deep Research focused mainly on web searches and publicly available information. With this enhancement, users can now share private or organisational documents for Gemini to read and analyse. The AI can process content from Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, and chat logs, synthesising them into context-rich insights, summaries, and reports.
Streamlining research for professionals and teams
Users can activate the feature through Gemini’s Tools menu, selecting specific data sources such as Gmail, Drive, or Chat. Once chosen, the system automatically designs a multi-step research plan, pulling from both internal and external information to deliver tailored outputs.
This means teams can now use Gemini to review internal communications, analyse project documents, and combine them with real-time online research — all in a single query. The tool can create project summaries, market analysis reports, or competitive insights, helping professionals save time otherwise spent manually scanning through files and emails.
A step toward AI-integrated workspaces
Google positions this update as part of its broader strategy to deepen AI integration into Workspace apps, meeting rising demand for intelligent and personalised work assistance. A product development team, for instance, can now ask Gemini to analyse brainstorming notes, related email threads, and planning files to produce a consolidated market report.
First launched in December 2024, Gemini’s Deep Research was designed to move beyond one-click summaries toward structured, step-by-step workflows. This latest upgrade cements its role as a research companion that blends AI reasoning with personal context.
For now, the update is live for all Gemini desktop users, with a mobile rollout expected soon, marking another step in Google’s push to make AI a seamless part of everyday work.
