The Indian government is reportedly considering a new regulation that would require e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho to add mandatory “country of origin” filters for all listed products. The move aims to promote transparency, empower consumers to make informed choices, and encourage the purchase of Made-in-Indiagoods.
Under the proposal, online marketplaces would need to display the country of manufacture clearly on product listings and enable users to filter search results based on origin. The initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen consumer protection and support the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) campaign.
Officials from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) are said to be finalizing the framework. The requirement could also apply to cross-border e-commerce sellers, ensuring greater accountability and fair trade practices.
Industry experts believe this measure will help boost domestic manufacturing and curb misleading listings, though some warn it could pose compliance challenges for small sellers relying on imported goods. Once approved, the directive will likely be implemented through updates to consumer e-commerce guidelines and enforced under the Legal Metrology Act.
