Hitachi Enlists Claude AI to Defend the World’s Critical Infrastructure

Hitachi, Ltd. has deepened its alliance with AI leader Anthropic, joining its newly launched Critical Infrastructure Defense Program as a founding partner. Announced on October 8, 2026, the initiative aims to fortify cyber defences for the control systems underpinning power, water, manufacturing and transportation, the lifelines of modern society.

The stakes are acute. Infrastructure systems cannot tolerate prolonged downtime, making routine security measures like shutdowns for patching extraordinarily difficult. Yet AI is dramatically compressing the window between a vulnerability’s disclosure and its exploitation, forcing a redesign of systems around the assumption that attacks will happen.

The program’s answer is speed. By embedding Anthropic’s advanced Claude models into the products and services of trusted system integrators and cybersecurity providers, it seeks to accelerate vulnerability detection and remediation. Hitachi will contribute through working groups, sharing its deep expertise in Operational Technology (OT) for critical-infrastructure environments.

The move extends a fast-maturing partnership. Since forging a strategic tie-up with Anthropic in May 2026, Hitachi joined the “Project Glasswing” initiative in June, accelerated security-validation processes in July, and in September launched HMAX Cyber, an operational-resilience service for the AI era.

Drawing on insights from the program, Hitachi now plans to enhance HMAX Cyber and harden its OT products, including industrial control systems.

Ultimately, the collaboration signals a decisive shift: defending the physical backbone of the economy increasingly means fighting AI-accelerated threats with AI-powered defence, pairing Anthropic’s frontier models with Hitachi’s industrial mastery to build safer, more resilient societies.
