In a landmark development at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, India has formally joined the Pax Silica coalition, a strategic alliance with the United States aimed at securing the global "silicon stack." This partnership seeks to fortify every layer of the technology ecosystem—from critical mineral extraction and semiconductor fabrication to AI infrastructure—while ensuring development remains governed by open, democratic societies.
The initiative is designed to reduce over-reliance on concentrated supply chains and prevent economic coercion. Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted India’s readiness to lead, noting that Indian engineers are already designing advanced two-nanometer chips. With the industry projected to require one million new skilled professionals, Vaishnaw emphasized that this collaboration creates immense opportunities for India’s workforce to drive global innovation.
U.S. Under Secretary of State Jacob Helberg and Ambassador Sergio Gor framed the agreement as a defining moment for 21st-century economic order. “Economic security is national security,” Helberg stated, emphasizing that the coalition is a direct commitment to building a future free from weaponized dependency. By integrating India’s compounding growth and semiconductor capabilities with U.S. technological infrastructure, the alliance aims to ensure that "free societies control the commanding heights of the global economy."
A high-level fireside chat featuring leaders from MeitY, Micron Technology, and Tata Electronics underscored the synergy between AI ambition and hardware resilience. As industry leaders noted, this "win-win ecosystem" is not just about technology; it is a deliberate effort to ensure the AI revolution is built on a foundation of trusted, resilient, and democratic partnership.
