OpenAI is working to combine ChatGPT, its browser, and Codex into a single platform, aiming to simplify workflows, enhance productivity, and offer a seamless AI experience amid intensifying competition in the global market.
OpenAI is preparing a significant overhaul of its product ecosystem by bringing together its key tools into a single, unified desktop platform. The initiative aims to streamline user experience and reduce the complexity of managing multiple applications.
The proposed “super app” will integrate the ChatGPT interface, OpenAI’s browser, and its coding-focused tool Codex into one cohesive environment. This integration is expected to allow users to switch seamlessly between tasks such as writing, coding, research, and browsing without leaving the platform.
Driving simplicity and productivity
The effort is being led by senior leadership, including applications head Fidji Simo and company president Greg Brockman. The move reflects a strategic shift toward simplifying offerings after a phase of rapid product expansion.
Over the past year, OpenAI has launched multiple updates, standalone tools, and experimental features to stay ahead in the AI race. While this approach accelerated innovation, it also resulted in a fragmented ecosystem for users. The new unified platform is intended to address these challenges by creating a more intuitive and productivity-focused experience.
The company has increasingly emphasised high-productivity use cases, indicating that the platform will go beyond basic interactions to support tasks such as professional writing, software development, and in-depth research.
Strategic response to growing competition
The consolidation comes at a time when competition in the AI sector is intensifying. Rivals such as Google are expanding their AI ecosystems, while Anthropic continues to grow with its Claude platform.
By unifying its core tools, OpenAI aims to deliver a more cohesive user experience and strengthen its position in both consumer and enterprise markets. The move is also seen as part of a broader effort to present a clearer product strategy as the company explores future growth opportunities.
If successfully implemented, the “super app” could become a central interface for everyday AI use, bringing multiple digital workflows into a single platform.
