Breaking News
OpenAI has announced collaborations with leading Indian universities to strengthen AI fluency among students, faculty, and staff, marking a major step toward developing an AI-ready workforce in the country. The initiative aims to integrate AI systematically across academic programs while ensuring responsible use and academic integrity.
The first cohort includes IIT Delhi, IIM Ahmedabad, AIIMS New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), and Pearl Academy, covering engineering, management, healthcare, creative arts, and multidisciplinary education. OpenAI’s approach goes beyond tool access, embedding AI into core learning, research, and campus operations.
Raghav Gupta, Head of Education, OpenAI India, said, “AI literacy is essential to building a future-ready generation. By embedding AI into the core infrastructure of universities, students will gain the skills to thrive in a world increasingly driven by AI.” The initiative will reach over 100,000 learners across campuses over the next year.
Campus-Wide AI Enablement
At IIT Delhi, OpenAI will provide campus-wide access to ChatGPT Edu, supporting engineering-led research, applied problem-solving, and prototype development. Faculty briefings, hackathons, and industry-focused Innovation Days will connect student projects with India’s deep-tech ecosystem.
IIM Ahmedabad will integrate AI into management education, covering strategy, operations, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, and public policy. The collaboration focuses on enabling faculty to teach responsibly with AI, while activating IIMA’s innovation ecosystem for research, startups, and industry partnerships.
At AIIMS New Delhi, AI will support medical education, faculty development, and clinical training, including simulation, documentation, and evidence synthesis. The proposed AI in Medical Education Hub will define safety and ethical standards to augment clinical judgment and improve patient outcomes.
MAHE will implement AI across engineering, computer science, health sciences, business, and allied disciplines, enabling students to gain applied AI proficiency across technical and professional domains. UPES will focus on multidisciplinary applications, including engineering, computer science, business, design, law, and health sciences, embedding AI as core academic infrastructure.
At Pearl Academy, AI fluency will support creative practice, including design, fashion technology, branding, and digital media, while emphasizing responsible and ethical use.
Scaling AI Beyond Campuses
To extend AI literacy beyond universities, OpenAI is collaborating with ed-tech platforms like PhysicsWallah, upGrad, and HCLGUVI, launching structured courses on AI fundamentals and practical ChatGPT applications for students and early-career professionals.
OpenAI’s initiative represents a broader shift in Indian higher education—from access to institutional AI transformation—ensuring graduates are not only proficient in AI tools but capable of leading in an AI-driven economy.
