Shashi Tharoor chosen to lead India’s key global anti-terror mission

Shashi Tharoor’s appointment to lead India’s diplomatic delegation reflects his diplomatic expertise and strong support for Operation Sindoor, positioning him as a key figure to represent India internationally, especially in the US, to counter Pakistan’s narrative and shape global opinion

The government has appointed senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor to head one of seven all-party parliamentary delegations set to travel abroad, aiming to brief key foreign governments about the recent India-Pakistan conflict and India’s position on terrorism and security. This diplomatic outreach comes in the aftermath of the brutal Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which killed 26 civilians, and India’s military retaliation, Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs announced the leaders who will represent India during this crucial global outreach, emphasizing the need for national unity and a collective message against terrorism, transcending political divides.

Tharoor’s appointment reflects both his diplomatic experience and his vocal support for the government’s handling of the conflict. His endorsement of Operation Sindoor was notable within the Congress party, where some leaders expressed concerns over internal differences. Despite this, his international reputation and eloquence make him an ideal figure to represent India’s case abroad, particularly in the United States, where he is expected to lead the delegation. This step highlights India’s strategic efforts to shape international opinion and counter Pakistan’s narrative on the world stage.

Multi-party teams to bolster diplomacy

The other six parliamentary delegations are led by prominent leaders from a variety of political parties, showcasing India’s bipartisan approach during this sensitive time. These include BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad and Baijayant Panda, JDU’s Sanjay Kumar Jha, DMK’s Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, NCP’s Supriya Sule, and Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Eknath Shinde. Each delegation will include around six to seven MPs and is scheduled to visit four to five countries that are vital to India’s foreign relations and security interests.

For example, the delegation led by Ravi Shankar Prasad will cover countries in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Algeria, while Supriya Sule’s team is set to visit Oman, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt. Meanwhile, Sanjay Jha’s delegation will travel through East and Southeast Asia, visiting Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia. These destinations were strategically chosen to address global Muslim populations and strengthen ties with nations across multiple continents.

The delegations include influential MPs from across the political spectrum, such as Anurag Thakur, Aparajita Sarangi, Manish Tewari, Asaduddin Owaisi, Priyanka Chaturvedi, and others, demonstrating India’s inclusive approach. Additionally, former Union Minister Salman Khurshid, despite not being a sitting MP, will join one of the delegations to lend his diplomatic expertise. While the government invited Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay to participate, he declined due to health reasons.

Building consensus on terrorism

The primary goal of these delegations is to build international consensus on combating terrorism and to spotlight Pakistan’s alleged involvement in cross-border terror activities. The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, under Kiren Rijiju’s leadership, is closely coordinating the visits to ensure a consistent and powerful narrative is presented.

The tours are expected to commence after May 22, with formal invitations already sent to the host countries. This coordinated outreach is a key element of India’s diplomatic strategy to strengthen partnerships and counteract misinformation surrounding the conflict.

Upon his nomination, Shashi Tharoor expressed gratitude and readiness to serve, emphasizing his commitment to national interests. Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Jairam Ramesh, coordinated with the government to nominate a diverse group of MPs for the delegations, ensuring broad political representation.

Ultimately, this initiative reflects India’s determination to present a united front internationally, reinforcing its message of zero tolerance toward terrorism and its commitment to peace and security in the region amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
