In a significant milestone for West Bengal’s industrial growth and Purulia’s economic transformation, Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, laid the foundation stone for Amit Metaliks’ upcoming integrated steel plant at Raghunathpur, Purulia, marking the commencement of one of the region’s major new industrial investments.
With a proposed investment of approximately ₹4,000 crore, the project represents Amit Metaliks’ long term commitment to West Bengal and its confidence in Purulia’s potential to emerge as an important centre for manufacturing, employment and economic activity.
The foundation stone laying ceremony was graced by the presence of Swapan Dasgupta, Minister-in-Charge, Finance; Tapas Roy, Minister-in-Charge, Industry, Commerce and Enterprises; Agnimitra Paul, Minister-in-Charge, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs; Dr. Ajay Kumar Poddar, Minister-in-Charge, Public Works and Public Health Engineering; and Arjun Singh, Minister-in-Charge, Transport and Labour. Also, present were Moumita Biswas Misra, Minister of State, Industry, Commerce and Enterprises, and Nadiar Chand Bouri, Minister of State, Public Works.
The occasion also witnessed the presence of Jyotirmay Singh Mahato, Member of Parliament from Purulia, along with several Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly from the district and surrounding regions, senior government officials, industry leaders, members of the local community and representatives of the media.

Spread across approximately 151 acres, the upcoming facility is envisioned as a modern, fully integrated steel manufacturing complex with an annual production capacity of approximately 1.2 million tonnes. The project is expected to be completed over the next 1000 days.
The investment is expected to create approximately 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, while also opening up significant opportunities for local enterprise, ancillary industries, logistics, services, skill development and small and medium businesses across Purulia and the surrounding region.
Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony, Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the investment and underlined the importance of industrial development in creating employment and economic opportunities across West Bengal.
“West Bengal has immense potential to emerge as one of India’s leading destinations for industry and manufacturing. Investments such as this create much more than industrial capacity. They create employment, develop local economies and bring new opportunities to our youth. Purulia has an important role to play in Bengal’s next phase of growth, and I welcome Amit Metaliks’ commitment to invest and build for the future here. Our Government will continue to support investments that contribute meaningfully to the progress and prosperity of Bengal and its people,” said Suvendu Adhikari, Chief Minister of West Bengal.
The new facility is being planned as an integrated steel plant where the manufacturing journey will extend from iron ore to finished, saleable steel within a single ecosystem. The plant will also have the capability to manufacture specialised grades of steel for the automotive sector, bringing higher value manufacturing capabilities to the region and strengthening West Bengal’s position within the larger steel and manufacturing ecosystem.
Sustainability has been integrated into the planning of the project from its inception. Among the proposed initiatives is a floating solar power facility, envisaged to be among the first of its kind for a steel plant in West Bengal.
Speaking on the occasion, Amit Kumar Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, Amit Metaliks, described the project as a long term commitment to Purulia and its people. He adds, “For us, this is much more than the foundation stone of a steel plant. It is the beginning of a long term commitment to Purulia and to West Bengal. We want to build an institution that creates employment, develops skills, supports communities and contributes meaningfully to the economic progress of this region. Our aspiration is that as Amit Metaliks grows here, thousands of families and enterprises around us grow with it.”
Amit Metaliks has envisioned the Purulia project not simply as an industrial investment, but as the beginning of a larger economic and social ecosystem around the plant.
The company proposes to establish a skill development institute in Purulia, with the objective of preparing local youth for employment opportunities emerging from the plant and the larger industrial ecosystem that develops around it.
Its community initiatives already include scholarships for deserving students, installation of borewells, support for water facilities in schools and other interventions focused on improving access to essential infrastructure.
Amit Metaliks has committed to planting one lakh trees in Purulia, with the objective of creating substantial green cover around the project and its surrounding areas. The initiative draws inspiration from the national call of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, translating its spirit into a long term commitment to the region.
The development is expected to generate opportunities across transportation, logistics, engineering, maintenance, fabrication, construction, hospitality, retail and a wide range of small and medium enterprises.
