Zoho CEO advocates for strengthening India’s technological ecosystem

Amid the ongoing discussions on Indian immigration and talent retention, Zoho Corporation CEO Sridhar Vembu has urged Indians to focus on building technological expertise within the country, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance over seeking recognition through achievements abroad.

Highlighting the need to enhance India’s domestic technological infrastructure, Vembu stated on X: “To earn true respect in the world, Indians have to develop deep capabilities in India. Achievements abroad won’t do it.”

Vembu elaborated on his efforts to retain talent within India, citing the nation’s critical need for skilled professionals to advance its technological capabilities. “As an Indian, I work tirelessly to keep talent in India because we desperately need it to strengthen our tech ecosystem,” he said.

While acknowledging the advantages of America’s immigrant-friendly policies, Vembu questioned the long-term viability of relying extensively on imported talent. He remarked on the historical preference of U.S. companies to import talent rather than nurture domestic expertise.

The tech leader also addressed the nuances of global talent migration, noting that debates around immigration policies often intersect with concerns about national development. He acknowledged that while opposition to immigration can sometimes be driven by prejudice, a discussion on the reliance on foreign talent is both necessary and valid.

Referring to an analysis of Indian immigration to the United States, Vembu recognized America’s success in attracting and integrating international talent. However, he reiterated his commitment to fostering talent retention within India, calling it essential for the nation’s technological growth.

Vembu posed a thought-provoking question about the cost of global recognition achieved through imported talent: “Is it worth celebrating being number one in GDP or AI, if it comes at the cost of neglecting your own people?”

His remarks underscore a broader call for prioritizing talent retention and fostering innovation within India to ensure sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
