Anthropic has rolled out localized subscription pricing for Claude AI in India, allowing users to pay directly in rupees. The initiative is intended to enhance affordability and user adoption in India, the company's second-largest market by user base.
Users in India are gradually seeing local pricing across Claude's paid plans on both the web and mobile apps. This removes the need for dollar-denominated payments, simplifying the subscription process and reducing the hassles associated with international transactions. The localisation comes as global AI companies intensify their efforts to capture India's rapidly expanding generative AI market.
Under the new pricing structure, the Claude Pro plan is available at Rs 2,000 per month with annual billing or Rs 2,399 per month when billed monthly. Anthropic has also launched two Claude Max tiers priced at Rs 11,999 and Rs 23,999 per month, catering to developers, researchers and power users with substantially higher usage limits. For businesses, the Claude Team plan starts at Rs 2,399 per user per month with annual billing, while the Premium Team plan is priced at Rs 11,999 per user per month. All subscription prices are inclusive of GST.
The introduction of local pricing reflects India's growing strategic importance for Anthropic. According to the company, India now accounts for 5.8% of Claude's global user base, making it the second-largest market after the US. Earlier this year, CEO Dario Amodei revealed that Anthropic's annualised revenue run rate in India had doubled within four months, underscoring the country's accelerating adoption of AI technologies.
Anthropic has been steadily strengthening its presence in the Indian market. The company inaugurated its first office in Bengaluru in February and has since expanded its engagement with developers and enterprises. It has also partnered with fintech company Razorpay to help businesses integrate Claude into AI-powered applications and services more easily.
The latest move comes as competition in the AI assistant market intensifies. OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Perplexity have all stepped up their efforts in India through new products, partnerships and enterprise offerings. By introducing local currency pricing, Anthropic is lowering one of the biggest barriers to paid subscriptions while signalling that India is becoming central to its long-term growth strategy.
