Apple is preparing to unveil a new, Gemini-powered version of Siri in February, marking the first visible outcome of its recently announced AI partnership with Google. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the update is expected to be announced in the second half of the month.
Powered by Google’s Gemini AI models, the upgraded Siri is designed to finally deliver on Apple’s AI promises made in June 2024. The assistant will reportedly be able to complete tasks by accessing a user’s personal data and understanding on-screen content, enabling more contextual and useful interactions.
This February release is only the first step in a broader Siri overhaul. Gurman notes that Apple is planning a significantly more advanced update to be announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. That version of Siri is expected to be far more conversational, resembling chat-based assistants like ChatGPT.
The upcoming Siri could also mark a major architectural shift, with parts of the assistant potentially running directly on Google’s cloud infrastructure. This would represent a notable change for Apple, which has traditionally emphasized on-device processing and tight ecosystem control.
The partnership comes amid reports that Apple has struggled to align its AI strategy over the past year. Previous internal tensions were hinted at when Apple executive Mike Rockwell reportedly dismissed earlier reports about Siri’s challenges.
However, with the Google Gemini collaboration and the recent exit of Apple’s AI chief John Giannandrea, the company appears to have reset its approach. The new Siri updates signal Apple’s renewed push to stay competitive in the fast-moving generative AI race.
