With lifetime revenue per installation at $2.91, ChatGPT holds a clear lead over Claude, Grok, and Copilot, as analysts cite Grok’s weaker performance to its delayed iOS and Android rollout in early 2025
OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile app has emerged as a clear leader in the artificial intelligence app economy, surpassing $2 billion in global consumer spending across iOS and Android platforms since its launch in May 2023. According to market intelligence firm Appfigures, the app’s momentum has only accelerated in 2025, recording a remarkable 673% year-on-year revenue growth.
The app has already been downloaded 318 million times this year, nearly three times higher than during the same period in 2024. India accounts for the largest share of lifetime installations at 13.7%, while the United States follows with 10.3%. However, U.S. users remain the biggest revenue contributors, generating almost 40% of the total global spending. On average, each U.S. download translates into $10 of revenue, with Germany ranking second but contributing significantly less at 5.3%.
Rivals struggle against ChatGPT dominance
Industry comparisons show ChatGPT leading in lifetime revenue per installation worldwide, averaging $2.91. Rival AI assistant Claude from Anthropic follows with $2.55, while Elon Musk’s Grok and Microsoft’s Copilot trail at $0.75 and $0.27, respectively. Analysts suggest Grok’s relatively weaker performance stems from its late entry into the mobile market. Though introduced in late 2023, Grok’s standalone iOS app launched only in January 2025, with Android support arriving two months later.
The sharp contrast in adoption also frames recent remarks by Musk, who criticized Apple for allegedly favouring OpenAI. Despite those claims, Grok’s official account publicly disagreed, and the latest app economy data highlights ChatGPT’s commanding position. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, ChatGPT generated $1.35 billion in mobile revenue—an astonishing 53 times higher than Grok’s $25.6 million.
With usage and spending continuing to surge, ChatGPT’s mobile app is setting new benchmarks for commercial success in the AI sector.See What’s Next in Tech With the Fast Forward Newsletter
