Stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Finance has acquired nearly 1,000 blockchain-related patents from IBM, marking one of the largest patent transfers in the blockchain industry to date.
The acquired portfolio spans more than 680 patent families and close to 1,000 issued patents worldwide. These cover a broad range of technology areas, including foundational blockchain infrastructure, banking and financial services applications, insurance use cases, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification systems, and secure cloud operations.
With this deal, Circle says it now holds the largest blockchain patent portfolio of any company in the United States. The company frames the acquisition as a strategic foundation for its broader ambition of building what it calls the "internet financial system" — an ecosystem that includes its USDC stablecoin, the Circle Payments Network, its Arc platform, and an expanding set of onchain products and agentic financial tools.
Beyond the patent transfer itself, Circle indicated it plans to explore further commercial collaboration opportunities with IBM going forward, suggesting the relationship between the two companies may extend beyond this single transaction.
Commenting on the acquisition, Circle's general counsel Sarah Wilson said intellectual property is central to the company's mission of expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure. She added that IBM has been a pioneer in technological innovation, and that the acquisition strengthens Circle's ability to build out the infrastructure underpinning global, internet-native finance.
The move underscores the growing importance major financial infrastructure players are placing on intellectual property as blockchain and stablecoin technology becomes more deeply integrated with traditional banking, payments, and enterprise systems.
