The data protection market has been reshaped by the surge in AI-driven security demand, lifting key players like Rubrik and Commvault in 2024. Both companies saw strong investor momentum, with Rubrik gaining sharply post-IPO and Commvault delivering impressive stock growth. However, the momentum proved uneven as market expectations evolved.
By 2025, the trajectories of the two firms diverged significantly. Rubrik continued its upward climb, supported by its modern, security-first architecture, while Commvault struggled with a more traditional, storage-centric positioning. This shift resulted in declining investor confidence, reflected in Commvault’s falling stock price and reduced valuation.
Growth metrics further highlight the gap. Rubrik reported nearly 49% revenue growth and continued hiring aggressively, signaling expansion and market confidence. In contrast, Commvault projected modest growth and initiated restructuring efforts to optimize costs, indicating a more cautious operational stance.
The broader SaaS downturn has impacted both firms, with stock prices under pressure. Yet, in a cybersecurity landscape increasingly driven by consolidation and category dominance, Rubrik appears better positioned as a long-term leader. This dynamic has intensified strategic pressure on Commvault.
Against this backdrop, Commvault is reportedly exploring a potential sale, working with Goldman Sachs amid interest from private equity and strategic buyers, including Thoma Bravo. The market responded positively to the news, with a short-term uptick in its stock, reflecting investor optimism around a possible deal.
Despite strong technology credentials and favorable analyst rankings, Commvault has struggled to convert innovation into market share gains. While competitors like Veeam and Rubrik expanded their presence, Commvault’s share has remained largely stagnant, underscoring challenges in execution and positioning.
Looking ahead, leadership changes and potential new ownership could provide the reset Commvault needs. In a cybersecurity market increasingly shaped by AI and platform consolidation, strategic alignment, go-to-market strength, and innovation execution will determine whether Commvault can regain competitiveness.
