December 2007 Edition

Congratulations! MTNL, Delhi has rolled out IPTV, Video on Demand and VoIP in the circle. It has offered various packages for the customers. The customers, who have broadband and Triband connections, can easily access this service. As per the scheme, the subscriber might have to pay Rs.200–300 per month for IPTV, but, for other services, it will be incremental charge.

It is perhaps the greatest gift to the Indian people in terms of technology in 2007. And, once BSNL and Reliance start rolling out this service, it will be more competitively priced for more quality.

Most of the people in India might not have known what IPTV or VoIP is, but they will soon take advantage of this service. Bollywood hunk, Shah Rukh Khan, who is at present appearing in an advertisement of “Wish Karo””for Dish TV will have to

change his lines very soon in his promo, because the consumers may not take interest in satellite Television any more. They can use their existing telephone connection with a new technology like Metro Ethernet to make it happen.

One more piece of news: Congratulations! The Indian PC market in January-September 2007 period touched 4.81 million (as per IDC India reports), which indicates that by the end of this fiscal the total market might exceed 9 million, which is almost 40 per cent growth over the last year. If this happens, the Indian IT market will assume a new growth track.

On the one side, PC penetration is becoming aggressive and, on the other, IP is taking the CE route to enter the households. After mobile phones, IP is the next thing that will empower the individuals. I do not think it is very far, but the year 2010 will be the year of catalyst and will witness the full potential of the Indian consumer. The vegetable vendors, grocers, apparel vendors and florists, who were taking orders on telephone, will now have a delivery mechanism and gateway of payment, though they will be operating from an air-conditioned mall. So, with the arrival of 2008, we will step into an IP-powered society. Don’t you think so?
