Vishal Gupta, Founder & Global CEO – Seclore in a chat with VARINDIA shares how the market for EDRM has been growing in the country and the opportunities that the current market situations is throwing for the company to capitalize
Electronic Digital Rights Management (EDRM) as a technology has been around for nearly 20 years. But largely it has been applied for media, news, videos and so on. Seclore is taking the same underlying concepts but applying this to the enterprise data that is moving around within the enterprise, or to the information going out of the organization to business partners, service providers, auditors and so on, for the purpose of security, privacy, compliance of documents, e-mails. That is what EDRM technology is all about.
Where Seclore differentiates itself is in its ease of use. “Historically, Rights Management (RM) has been very difficult to use because you have to look into so many things for the technology to work – like the information has to be in a certain format, you have to use a particular device and so on. In our case however, there is a promise that irrespective of the device or the application used, the RM technology will work and most importantly enhance user experience. So if there is an enterprise using Document Management System like SharePoint or Dropbox, the Seclore technology used would automatically protect the information in it,†explains Vishal Gupta, Founder & Global CEO – Seclore.
The awareness for EDRM is created by picking and choosing specific areas or those business functions in an organization that deal with confidential information exchange with external agencies. “We are creating awareness by means of webinars, in-person events and a lot of thought leadership talks, publish papers that specifically talk about these trends,†says Vishal. The market size estimations for EDRM have varied from 200 crores to nearly 1000 crores in India. “But we believe that history may not be a reflection of the future in this case, because the number of situations in this case where EDRM becomes the only method of securing information has constantly increased,†he continues.
The focus for Seclore historically has been financial services, manufacturing and engineering companies, where it has some of the big names using its technology. With the opening of its Delhi office however, Seclore’s significant focus would also be on the government. “Surprisingly, we have governments from 9 different countries as our customers today but we have not started working with the Indian government,†Vishal says.
Today Seclore has its customers in 38 countries, and about 450 enterprises use its technology. Vishal sums up saying that in order to remain profitable, it is really very important for the channel fraternity to acknowledge the value of recurring subscription license versus the more traditional approach of a perpetual license. According to him, the recurring subscription sets up a recurring revenue model for the partners, and the faster they realize this the easier it would be for them to migrate from traditional on-premise selling model to more cloud oriented subscription based model.
