Vine, acquired by Twitter in 2012 for $30 million, was a social media sensation before shutting down in 2017 due to competition from Instagram and Snapchat.
Elon Musk has officially announced that Vine, the iconic short-form video app, is making a comeback — this time with artificial intelligence (AI) integration. Musk, who owns X (formerly Twitter) and leads companies like Tesla and SpaceX, shared the update in an X post that has already crossed 23 million views, saying, “We’re bringing back Vine, but in AI form.”
Originally acquired by Twitter in 2012 for $30 million, Vine quickly became one of the most popular short-video social media platforms after its launch in 2013. Known for its six-second looping videos, Vine helped launch the careers of several influencers and celebrities, including Shawn Mendes and Logan and Jake Paul. However, the rise of Instagram and Snapchat gradually overshadowed Vine, leading to its shutdown in 2017.

Musk has been exploring the idea of reviving Vine since he acquired Twitter for $44 billion in 2022. Shortly after the acquisition, he conducted a poll asking users if they wanted Vine back, with 70% of nearly 5 million participants voting in favor.
The AI-powered version of Vine is expected to reimagine the platform for modern users, potentially competing with popular apps like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. By combining Vine’s nostalgia with AI-driven content creation tools, Musk aims to attract both creators and audiences looking for innovative social media experiences.
With this move, Musk is positioning X as a major player in the short-video and AI-powered content space, opening doors for creators to leverage advanced tools for engaging storytelling.
