Elon Musk's Grok to now power US Military

The Department of War announced that the Pentagon has partnered with Elon Musk’s expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem to deploy xAI’s Grok models across government systems. Under this collaboration, the “frontier-grade” capabilities of Grok will be integrated into the department’s newly launched AI platform, GenAI.mil. 

Starting as early as 2026, the partnership will enable more than 3 million military and civilian personnel to securely access advanced AI tools for daily tasks, including those involving sensitive government information.

The department stressed that the tools are engineered to operate safely within secure systems, ensuring compliance with federal security protocols even when handling sensitive but unclassified material.

According to xAI, its models will support a wide spectrum of government operations, ranging from administrative work at federal, state and local levels to mission-critical activities occurring at the front lines of military operations.

The War Department noted that this agreement builds upon ongoing efforts to rapidly scale cutting-edge AI capability across its workforce, reinforcing the department’s commitment to embedding AI throughout its operational ecosystem. Grok’s ability to analyze real-time data is expected to give personnel a decisive information advantage, particularly in fast-moving global environments where rapid situational awareness is essential.

One of the most significant features of the partnership is Grok’s access to live information from X, which the War Department says will enhance global monitoring and improve decision-making speed.

xAI stated that this collaboration could eventually pave the way for supporting classified workloads, with the company preparing government-optimized foundation models capable of operating in highly secure environments.
