Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who will present her ninth consecutive Budget on Sunday, is currently the longest-serving finance minister to hold the post continuously. At present, she is the only Finance Minister in India to have such a long, continuous run.
On February 1, she will present a record ninth budget in a row. Since 2019, Nirmala Sitharaman has consistently delivered budgets, with six full budgets and three interim ones.
By presenting her ninth budget in a row, Nirmala Sitharaman will almost near the record of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who holds the record for the most budgets presented, which is 10.
Ahead of the Budget session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that Sitharaman presenting the Union Budget for the ninth consecutive time "will be recorded as a matter of pride in India's parliamentary history". Sitharaman took charge of the Finance Ministry on May 31, 2019 and completed six years and eight months in office on January 31, 2026.
In the year 2025, she surpassed famous finance ministers like Manmohan Singh and Arun Jaitley, who all presented six budgets.
Additionally, the Finance Minister has shifted from traditional “budget briefcase” to digital “Bahi Khata” (tablet), showing a move towards technology.
